Michael Romero is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist driven by a desire for social change. At home on the guitar, trumpet, keys and mandolin, Romero was voted one of Austin’s top ten horn players in the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Austin Music Awards. He has performed multiple times at Austin City Limits Music Festival and on NPR’s Baltimore affiliate station WYPR. Romero’s folk-jazz-Latin band, Strumero, has released three independent albums centered on themes of social justice.
In 2014 Romero began playing with fellow Austinite Gina Chavez, singing harmony, swapping the lead, and often playing multiple instruments at once. In 2015, the band swept the Austin Music Awards, winning Best Latin Band, Musician of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. In 2015-2016 Romero traveled with the Gina Chavez Trio to Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Central and South America through a grant from the U.S. State Department’s American Music Abroad and American Voices programs.
